Sometimes the easiest of things are overlooked. When the oil is due to be changed, a service engine oil light will display on the dash panel as well as some annoying beeping when you start the vehicle. Then you just hit the “Mode” button on the dash to make the message go away. But guess what, next time you start the vehicle, the message shows right back up! After you change the oil, follow this procedure:
Reset 2004-2006 Pontiac GTO Service Engine Oil Reset
How to reset the Pontiac GTO oil service light:
The GM Oil Life System calculates when to change your engine oil and filter based on vehicle use. Anytime your oil is changed, reset the system so it can calculate when the next oil change is required. If a situation occurs where you change your oil prior to a Service Engine Oil message being turned on, reset the system.
- After changing the engine oil, reset the system by performing the following steps:
With the engine off, turn the ignition key to ON.
- Fully press & release the accelerator pedal slowly two times within five seconds, if this does not work start again and then push the gas pedal 3 times within 5 seconds.
- Turn the key to LOCK. Remove the key. Insert the key to the ON position and the Service Engine Oil message should be gone.
If the Service Engine Oil message comes back on when you start your vehicle, the engine oil life system has not reset. Repeat the procedure.
