On the 2004-2006 Pontiac GTO there is a notorious problem with the wiring harness. The Body Control Module (BCM) wiring harness is located right behind and slightly below the passenger side glove box. Unfortunately, the wires coming off the BCM are sitting right on a structural piece of metal that can cause rubbing on the wires. This rubbing is known to slowly wear away at the wires’ protective insulation and could possibly cut through to the wire causing an electrical short. The BCM wiring harness repair is an easy and simple solution to this problem.

If this happens it will cause havoc on the electrical system of your vehicle. What does a Body Control Module (BCM) control? The automotive central body control module (BCM) is a processor-based power distribution center that supervises and controls functions related to the car body such as lights, windows, security, door locks and access control, and various comfort controls.

Below you will find a video explaining how to correct this problem. Now personally, and just in my opinion, you do not need to go to the great lengths as explained in the video. Simply examining the wires and wrapping the wire with additional electrical tape right over the factory wrap should cushion the wires enough. I do agree with wrapping the wires further down to prevent any exposed wires from rubbing on anything they shouldn’t be. If you want to go the full route, the video does an excellent job of explaining what to do.

Exterior lighting for vehicles has come a long way over the years. The ability to see the road at night, as well as seeing other cars, and other cars being able to see you while night driving is and always has been extremely important. There is no guarantee that every street, road, and highway you are traveling on will have the proper street lighting to ensure a highly visible area for you to drive on. And let’s face it, as human beings, our eyes are not made to see in the dark, hence the term “Let there be light”.

Traditional bulbs in vehicles use a glass casing with a filament that light ups when electricity is applied. The output of the light from bulbs will often give a “yellow” look for headlights, and on tail lights, parking lamps, turn signals, and brake lights, the bulbs are relying on the color of the housing they are being plugged into. In other words, the bulb filament lights, and then that light must shine through a red tail light or brake light before being seen. The already “yellow” look of the bulb light must pass through another obstacle, dulling down the amount of light even more before it is visible. Doesn’t sound very safe, does it? Of course, we will all think, just like an interior light bulb in your house, we will just put a brighter bulb in and it will be brighter. This concept, of course, looks great on paper, but unfortunately, the auto parts makers leave us with usually just a couple of options for headlights, tail lights, and brake lights you usually get one option for a replacement bulb.

HID Headlights

With forward movement in technology, HID (High-Intensity Discharge) lighting for headlights became available. With this technology, a broad range of different colors and color depths became available for you to install on your vehicle to light up the road better. The HID conversion kits need to be wired into the electrical system. Also, HID lights are not “instant on”, they need to warm up to achieve maximum brightness. These lights came in a variety of colors including Purple, Blue, Yellow, and other shades. I’m not really sure how having Purple or Yellow headlights is going to light up the road better or make your night driving experience any safer, but yet you have that option. Unfortunately, these were not “plug and play” kits, and some wiring is needed to install them. Below I found this kit on eBay for $29.99 for a 2006 Pontiac GTO. Please inspect the images and then continue reading.

Doesn’t that look fun to install? Not really sure I trust a $29.99 product that needs this many wires just to light a headlight. Now check out the colors it comes in:

How will those colors improve my night driving vision and increase my safety? They won’t! You would be better off taping two flashlights to the hood of your car. In fact, two quality flashlights would cost more than this HID Headlight kit. This is a pure example of “You Get What You Pay For”.

…..And the Clouds Parted, and Plug and Play LED Automotive Lights Were Born

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. LED lights use 85% less energy than a halogen bulb. LED lights also produce just as much, if not more light while using less energy. LED lights are also “instant on”. They do need to warm up to achieve the brightest output. Light in its purest form should be white. Not Purple, not Yellow, but a nice bright white illuminating what the light is directed at without producing glare or yellow look. I found the following light bulbs and LED light information on https://superbrightleds.com:

Light Bulbs

Incandescent bulbs use—at most—10 percent of the energy they consume to make visible light; the other 90 percent is wasted heat.

They produce a considerable amount of infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) radiation that can be damaging to fabrics and artwork over time.

They’re designed to last around 1,200 hours.

Incandescent bulbs have a fragile glass envelope and brittle filament wire.

These bulbs are relatively cheap but consume so much energy that standard 40- and 60-watt options are no longer available for purchase in the U.S.

They create a warm yellow light.

LED Lighting

LEDs run much cooler than incandescent and halogen bulbs, which greatly increases their longevity and enables them to function in cold temperatures.

Unless an LED is specifically infrared (IR) or ultraviolet (UV), it produces little to no IR or UV radiation, which can be damaging to fabrics and artwork.

They can last up to 50,000 hours—42 times longer than incandescent bulbs and 13 times longer than halogen bulbs.

Power consumption is the lowest compared to all other lighting technologies—80 percent less than incandescent bulbs and 75 percent less than halogen bulbs.

The shatterproof bulbs are shock-resistant and have no brittle filaments.

LEDs require a higher initial investment but produce greater energy returns over time.

LEDs contain no mercury, harmful gasses, or toxins.

They are available in many different whites and colors.

Because of their low power consumption, LEDs are great alternative lighting solutions for solar-powered systems.

Just in the last 5 years, automotive LED lighting has come a long way. The need for conversion kits has disappeared, and the introduction of true plug-and-play LED lighting replacement has arrived. What this means is simply to replace the bulb with an LED light. No wiring is needed. Applications are available now for almost any vehicle, and it literally is as easy as changing a light bulb.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-5254" src="https://markquitterracing.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/LED-Difference-Fig-1.jpg" alt="Passenger side has Halogen.
After many hours of research, I have found the best lighting application for your 2004-2006 Pontiac GTO. Diode Dynamics has done all the research for us. Changing all of your exterior lights to LED lighting is the smartest and safest improvement you can do to make driving a night more pleasurable, as well as feeling safe that you can see the road better, and other cars can see you. Please watch the video below to get the full details on how LED lighting works for both vision and safety:

Diode Dynamics offers a full list of videos for you to watch explaining every aspect of their product as well as their company. You can visit the Diode Dynamics YouTube Channel here.

As you can see, Diode Dynamics offer true LED plug-and-play replacement lighting for your vehicle. No cutting, no wiring, simply remove your current light bulb and replace it with the new LED light. The new LED light will plug into your factory plug socket, and the light will fit in the housing just like any factory bulb.

Step 2: Headlight installation is fairly straightforward. On the driver’s side, if you have the factory (stock) airbox and air filter, you will need to remove the airbox to get behind the headlight assembly to remove the bulb. If you have a K&N Cold Air Intake on your vehicle, you should be able to reach the headlight bulb without removing anything. Remove the dust cover cap that covers the headlight bulb. Turn the Headlight bulb counterclockwise to unlock the locking tabs and pull straight out. Disconnect the low beam wiring plug from the low beam headlight bulb. Install the new LED light into the headlamp assembly. Be sure to line up the locking tabs and use slight pressure to push forward and turn clockwise to lock into place. Be sure the LED light is inserted per the instructions to get the maximum lighting effect. After the new led headlight is installed, you can re-install the headlight dust cover. The nice thing about the plug-and-play LED lights is they do fit just like the factory bulbs and the headlight dust covers can be installed. Repeat all the steps for both the low beam and high beam headlights.
I actually had to modify the locking tabs on the new LED light to get it to properly seat and lock into place. You may not have to do this. Nothing has to be removed to change the fog light bulbs. Simply reach under the front bumper and turn the bulb counterclockwise to release the bulb from the fog light assembly. Disconnect the light from the wiring plug. Before connecting the plug to the new LED light, check the fit. If the new SL1 H10 LED light fits and locks into place, connect the wiring plug, zip tie any extra wiring in place, and you are done. If you find you can not get the new LED light to lock in place, follow these steps.

2) Remove the lock collar from the SL1 H10 LED light. Do not sand down the backside. If you sand down the backside the lock collar will drop down farther making the light very hard to lock in place.

3) Sand down the 2 larger locking tabs themselves making the width of the locking tabs a bit smaller. There are 3 locking tabs total, 1 smaller, and 2 larger tabs. The smaller tab lines up just fine. The 2 larger tabs are a bit wider than the factory/stock locking collar. This will give more wiggle room to lock in the collar into the fog light housing. Sand down only one side of the tabs. Compare them to the factory bulb. Sand just a little at a time. You do not need to take much off. Just sand enough that all the locking tabs fit nicely into the fog light housing. Check the fit, lock your new LED light into place, use zip ties to neatly tuck away the wires, and you’re done.

The LED Difference – Turn Signals Front and Back Installation

When switching over to LED turn signals on a vehicle that came stock with bulbs, a change to the electrical system needs to be made. It only involves changing a relay fuse and is extremely easy to do.

LED lights as we learned earlier use much less energy than traditional bulbs. Your vehicle will detect when a turn signal bulb has burnt out. The vehicle’s electrical system senses that fewer amps are being used, and your turn signal will hyper blink on the dashboard. Rapid turn signal flashing on the dashboard will occur, telling the driver that a turn signal is not working, and more than likely needs a bulb replacement.

When switching these turn signal bulbs to LED lights, your vehicle is sensing the extra low current from the LED lights and will react as though the light bulbs are burnt out, and your car will engage hyper blinking when using the turn signals. To rectify this, you must change the Flasher Relay on the fuse box to an LED Flasher Relay.

This Relay is extremely simple to replace. The fuse box on 2005-2006 Pontiac GTO’s is located on the driver’s side, under the steering column. Pull down the cover under the steering wheel gently from the top. There are locking tabs on the left and right sides of the cover. Lower the fuse box panel cover, you do not need to completely remove the cover. On the left side, you will see the fuse panel.

Conclusion

Changing the exterior lights on your vehicle to LED lighting will greatly improve your night driving vision. I realize this may be a costly upgrade, but how much is it worth to you to be able to see the road better, and know other drivers can see you? LED lighting uses less energy and does not need to warm up to become bright. Your car battery will thank you, and your eyes will thank you for the improved night vision. Do your own homework. Watch the video’s supplied by Diode Dynamics. Don’t be fooled by cheap imitation halogen bulbs that claim to be just as bright as LED lighting. As the sayings go, “The proof is in the pudding”, and “You get what you pay for”.

LED Lighting for your Interior. The factory bulbs that are used on the interior of the vehicle do their job. The dome and door lights come on when you open the doors, the glove box has a light when you open it, and the center console lights up when you flip the lid open. It lights, it works, but the lighting it offers by today’s standards in an LED light future is mediocre at best. The factory bulbs are not very bright, and they give a yellow-looking glow rather than the bright white that modern LED bulbs can offer.

Changing the interior lights to LED bulbs will drastically improve the amount of light projected inside your vehicle. There is even an LED option for the trunk light. Why settle for weak lighting when you can get a much better illumination on your vehicle’s interior by switching to LED lights. At night time this will obviously make a big difference from weak lighting, to actually being able to see inside your car’s interior.

The 2004-2006 Pontiac GTO has the following interior lights:

Door Lights: 1 on each door

Map Lights/Dome Light: 1 dome light and 2 map lights located in the overhead dome light assembly

Center Console Light: 1 light that comes on when the center console lid is flipped open

Glove Box Light: 1 light that comes on when the passenger side glove box is opened

Under Dash Lights (Stepwell): 1 on each side of the front cabin area, driver and passenger side. The factory color is green.

Trunk Light: 1 light in the trunk when it is opened.

All of these lights are fairly easy to change. A small flat head screwdriver is really all you need to get to the bulbs.

The Best Part About Changing Interior Bulbs To LED
The available LED lights for your interior are all plug-and-play! Simply replace the factory bulbs with the new LED bulbs and receive instant gratification from lighting your interior for better visibility at night. The LED lights will be exact replacements for your factory interior lighting bulbs but will be LED lights instead of light bulbs. Also, LED lights use much less power to illuminate than light bulbs. This means less drain on your car battery, as well as the improved brightness and visibility that LED lights can offer.

Which Companies LED Lights Should I Use?
I have found 2 companies that make decent LED lights alternatives for the interior. The first one is “superbrightleds.com“. The second and the best overall choice for the best and brightest interior LED lights are “Diode Dynamics“.
Diode Dynamics will be the company we are using for every interior light replacement except one. The under-dash LED lights will be supplied by superbrightleds.com, only because Diode Dynamics does not offer these bulb replacements. Also, do not attempt to change the vanity mirror lights. You have been warned. There is no way to remove the vanity mirror lights from the sun visors without damaging the plastic vanity mirror housing. It has been tried by many including myself, and we all have failed.

Below is a list of the LED lights used with links to the websites where they can be purchased:

Note: The trunk, center console, and glove box are all the exact same light and part number for the LED alternative. The center console and glove box are actually 38mm Festoons, so the replacements are 1mm longer. But I assure you they will fit. You may have to bend the metal tabs slightly to fit them into place, but they will work. I have used these in my center console and glove box with zero issues. I have even called and informed Diode Dynamics of this fitment and they have also confirmed that the trunk LED will fit in the glove box and center console as well.

As you can see, many of the bulbs are the same for different parts of the vehicle. The Trunk, Glove Box, Center Console, Dome Light, and Door Lights actually use the exact same light bulb sizes. The only difference from the factory is the wattage used for each place. But we want bright LED lights on our interior, so we will use the same LED lumens replacement throughout the vehicle.

When you choose which bulbs to purchase, keep this in mind. Colored LED lights will not be as bright as the white ones. The higher the “Lumens” the brighter the bulb will illuminate. The other unit used for LED lights is “Kelvin”.The higher the number, the cooler the color. K is used as a reference number to quickly estimate the light color of a bulb or LED. Color temperatures above the 5,000K mark are cool colors, such as whites and blues. Colors under 5,000K are warm colors, yellowish-white all the way down to red. On this scale, daylight falls between 5,000K and 6,200K. Reds, oranges, yellows, whites, and blues make up the color scale. There are no greens or purples or other colors on this scale as light does not emit in those colors.

To get to the lights you have to break off the plastic tabs that hold the vanity mirror assembly to the sun visors. The lights are put in at the factory and put in place from behind the plastic vanity mirror assembly. Even if you get the vanity mirror assembly off, you still can’t access the bulbs. Many have tried to replace these lights, including myself, and we have all failed. You have been warned.

INSTALLATION

This very well could be the easiest installation you will ever do on your 2004-2006 Pontiac GTO ever. And the best part is, you can literally see the results, it’s day and night. Do you see where I am going with this? Anyways, here it is:

Doors – These will be the hardest lights to change. There are two slots where you can fit a small flat head screwdriver in to pop the door light assembly off. Just going, to be honest here, 9 out of 10 times, the plastic clear lens will pop off of the assembly while you are trying to get it out. If this happens you can easily take a couple of small dabs of Gorilla Glue to put it back into place before re-installing the assembly with the new LED lights installed. Here is a video to show you how it is done:

Center Console – Flip open the center console and locate the light. Take your small flat head screwdriver to pry the clear plastic lens cover off, use the indented tab to do this. Replace the factory bulb with your new LED bulb. You may need to work the bulb into place a bit. The metal tabs act as a spring to hold the bulb in place. Even though the new bulb is 1mm longer, it will fit. Put the lens cover back on, clicking it into place.

Glove Box – Open the glove box on the passenger side of the vehicle and locate the light. Take your small flat head screwdriver to gently pry off the lens cover. Use the indented part of the lens to pry. Replace the factory light bulb with your new LED light. You may have to adjust the metal tabs that act as a spring to hold the bulb in place. Place the lens cover back on clicking it into place.

Dome Light/Map lights – You are going to replace all 3 lights at the same time here. Locate your dome light on the overhead headliner between the passenger and driver seat. There are 2 tabs that hold the plastic lens covering the bulbs. Locate the tabs and gently use a small flat head screwdriver to pry the lens cover off. With the lens cover off you will see a center light bulb which is the dome light. And to the left and right of that light, you will see metal tabs with a hole in them. Under those metal, tabs are the map lights. Remove the metal tabs by using the small flat head screwdriver on the thin part of the metal that is clipped into place. Once the metal tabs are removed you can access the map lights. Change all 3 lights, one dome light, and the 2 map lights. Replace the metal tabs that cover the map lights, they simply click into place. Re-install the dome light lens cover being sure it clicks into place.

Under Dash/Stepwell – Absolutely the easiest bulb to change. Simply reach under the dashboard and pull out the factory light bulb. Install the new LED light in its place. I noticed the LED wedge bulb is slightly loose compared to the factory bulb but it will go into the socket. If the LED bulb is too loose, you can simply add a little Elmers Glue to the LED light. Put the glue just above the wire connectors of the bulb and just below the light part of the LED bulb. The Elmers Glue will fill the gap and hold the bulb in place without hardening the glue and making it impossible to get back out, and will not ruin the LED light or the light socket. Do not use any form of super glue.

Trunk – Open the trunk and locate the light. Take your small flat head screwdriver to unsnap the plastic lens cover covering the light. There is an indent where the locking tab is for the lens cover. Replace the factory light with your new LED light. You may have to work the metal tabs that hold the LED light in place. If you have already done all the other lights, you will see the pattern here in how the lights are held in. Place the light lens cover back on by clicking it into place.

Choosing the right car battery for your 2004-2006 Pontiac GTO. It’s a beautiful day out and you just got done washing and waxing your car. The car looks great, and you feel great, so it’s time to go for a drive. You put the key in the ignition, give the key a turn to start your car, and all you hear is “click, click, click, click”.

We all know what this sound is. Time for a new battery. So which car battery should you buy?

I personally only use “Optima” car batteries. They come in two (2) different applications for automobiles, Yellow Top and Red Top. What’s the difference you ask? I’ll tell you.

AGM Battery
Optima batteries are often mistaken for a “gel” battery. They are actually “AGM” batteries, not gel. The name AGM stands for Absorbed Glass Mat. Optima batteries are completely sealed. There are no caps to remove or water to add ever. The internal design of the Optima battery using AGM keeps the electrolyte in place in the entire battery, meaning no battery acid is “sloshing” around inside the battery. This excerpt is taken right from the Optima website:

“Sealed Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries like OPTIMA® Batteries do not spill, sulfate or degrade like flooded batteries do. AGM design holds the electrolyte in suspension while keeping it in constant contact with the active lead material on the plates. This results in higher efficiency when both discharging and recharging.

AGM design offers lower internal resistance and greater plate area, which provides superior starting power, the ability to recharge much faster and higher voltage characteristics during discharge.”

Optima Battery Charging
Charging and maintaining an Optima can be confusing and tricky. Some battery chargers have a “gel” setting on them, and as we just learned, these are not gel batteries. You can not charge Optima batteries like a normal acid/water-filled battery either. So how do charge and maintain an Optima battery if I can’t use a normal battery charger? You need to purchase the Optima Digital Battery Charger. This can not be avoided and is a must when owning Optima batteries. The Optima Battery charger is designed for AGM batteries and will completely charge and maintain both yellow top and red top batteries. All Optima Red Top and Yellow Top automotive batteries come with a 3-year warranty. Should you need to use this warranty for any reason, the only way the warranty will be granted is if you properly used and maintained your battery. Only use the Optima battery charger on optima batteries. Click the image below to view Optima Battery Chargers:

Automotive applications have two(2) choices, Yellow Top or Red Top. What’s the difference you ask? Read below to find out:

YELLOWTOP batteries provide deep-cycle power. This allows you to enjoy all of your electronic accessories while your vehicle is off, such as audio systems, DVD players or underbody lights. For off-roaders, your battery will allow you to winch your way out of precarious situations. There are also a number of key-off draws that pull energy from your battery, including clocks, alarm systems, digital radios (station settings) and onboard computer systems. You’ll be able to pull all of this power from your YELLOWTOP with the confidence that your battery’s energy will recover time after time.”

Conclusion
Personally, I use the Optima Red Top. I do not run a lot of electrical accessories in my car. I have a high compression engine and I still run an alternator. I need as many cold cranking amps as I can get to turn over and start a high compression engine as fast as possible. The Red Top meets and exceeds these requirements.

For those of you running high-end car audio and lots of LED lighting in your cars, you may want to go for the Yellow Top. But keep in mind, you may need to recharge and maintain the battery if you are running accessories without the car running for an extended period of time. The Yellow Top does have a deeper cycle than the Red Top but will drain if not properly maintained.
